A magnitude 8 earthquake has struck Northern Peru, leaving at least one person dead.
The quake, at a moderate depth of 114 kilometres, struck at 2.41am (local time - 7.41pm NZ), 80km southeast of the village of Lagunas and 158km east-northeast of the larger town of Yurimaguas.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said there was no tsunami threat from the quake.
